Low Sperm Count in Men - Causes and Treatment

Getting your partner or wife pregnant may be more difficult if you suffer from a condition called Oligozoospermia. Oligozoospermia is better known as low sperm count, and affects thousands of healthy men all over the world. Having such a condition may decrease the chances of pregnancy and cause frustration for the couple.

It is often subdivided into three main categories: physical, genetic, or emotional. On the physical scale, over-ejaculation, exposure to high levels of heat periodically such as baths or sitting on machines, or direct testicular trauma can cause a low sperm count in a otherwise healthy reproductive system. On the genetic scale, having pre-existing deficiencies or malformations can cause the inability to impregnate a woman.

And on the emotional side, high levels of stress can cause changes in the hormonal balance of the reproductive system causing oligozoospermia.

What can you do if you suffer from low sperm count? First of all, getting yourself checked is key to knowing what the root cause of the problem is. Aside from medical treatments that your doctor may prescribe such as taking in supplements or vitamins and the like, you can make sizable changes in your lifestyle that may help treat your condition. First, maintain a healthy weight, eat right, exercise, and get enough rest.

Keeping your body in top shape can help stabilise your reproductive system and cause a rise in sperm count. Second, stop smoking. Smoking has a direct effect on the testicles and causes not only a decrease in sperm count, but infertility and cancer. Third, avoid the use of recreational or illegal drugs. Drugs alter the hormonal balance of the body. And lastly, avoid tight underwear, over exercising, or hot baths or saunas that may cause a dramatic rise in body temperature and damage the production of healthy sperm.
